Energy and Power
Reverse osmosis technology plays an integral part in the power and energy industry. As the demand for energy continues to grow, plant operators are looking for cost-effective ways to increase energy output for a number of applications. For example, feed water used in power plant boilers must be purified, because suspended particles and dissolved solids in the water can cause corrosion, foaming, and water carryover, which may lead to costly repairs and halted production.
Energy and Power Industry Applications of Reverse Osmosis
To avoid such disruptions to production in the power and energy industry, reverse osmosis is commonly used to clean boiler feed water. Boilers, or steam generators, are typically used to create steam in the production of power. Steam boilers are most commonly known for generating electricity in the energy business. The steam is generated and pushed through turbines to generate electricity. Water treatment is crucial at this point, because the water used to create the steam has to be free from minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, in order to prevent mineral buildup in the boiler. This mineral buildup slows down the steaming process, which increases the cost of producing the steam. When reverse osmosis water purification is employed before water is steamed, mineral buildup is eliminated before it can become a costly problem.
Boilers are also used in the hospital industry. Hospitals need a large volume of steam produced efficiently. Steam is used to disinfect many medical tools. It is also used for laundry and in food service operations. Reverse osmosis water treatment technology ensures that impurities are removed from the feed water so that the boilers can operate at the highest quality. Reverse osmosis also extends the life of the machinery.
Cooling towers are another effective application for reverse osmosis water treatment to assure efficient and uninterrupted operation. Cooling towers are used in such operations as oil refineries, thermal power stations, and HVAC systems. Cooling towers safely remove heat that is generated from these aforementioned applications and safely dispose of it to the atmosphere. The water in the industrial cooling towers needs to be treated to remove any minerals and contaminants that can foul or scale, preventing the effective flow of the water. Bio-film is another common problem in cooling towers that can prevent them from functioning effectively. Chemical treatment of the water may be necessary to remove these micro-organisms.
Related Markets and Applications
Reverse osmosis water treatment technology is used in various applications, improving productivity and reducing costs. Power and energy production boilers are a common application for reverse osmosis water treatment. Such boilers are used in hospitals, laundry and dry cleaners, and energy plants. Without effective water treatment solutions, these applications would not be successful. Cooling towers also depend on reverse osmosis water treatment technologies to remove the waste heat. Without clean water, the operation of cooling towers would be greatly hindered. Reverse osmosis is a versatile water technology that supports the successful operation and maintenance of many applications in the energy and power industry.
